What is densus 88?

Densus 88 is a counter-terrorism unit of the Indonesian National Police. It was formed in 2003 after the Bali bombings, which killed over 200 people. Densus 88 is tasked with preventing and suppressing terrorism threats in Indonesia, including those from extremist groups such as Jemaah Islamiyah, Islamic State, and others. The unit is highly trained and equipped with advanced technology, and it frequently collaborates with other nations' anti-terrorism agencies. Densus 88's operations have been controversial due to allegations of human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings and torture of suspects. However, the unit's leadership has denied such claims in the past and has defended its actions as necessary for protecting national security.
